KERRY ANN MURPHY
7th Grade Math Teacher
Kerry Ann Murphy has been grateful to be teaching 7th grade mathematics in Mineola Union Free School District since 2014. She has dedicated her efforts to motivating her students to become independent lifelong learners in a welcoming environment that encourages kindness, empathy, perseverance, and risk-taking.
She has acted as a new teacher mentor, member of the Mathematics Curriculum Committee, member of the Mindfulness Committee, member of the Parent/Teacher Site Based Event Planning Team, teacher advisor for students, and moderator of Girls Who Code, Cultural Club, and the Robotics Team.
She graduated from Molloy College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Adolescent Math Education 7-12/Special Education 7-12 and a minor in Spanish and from Molloy College again with a Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Her interest in learning about growth mindset led her to conduct an action research study based on the question, “Will instruction about growth mindset help to improve comprehension for English as a New Language students in 7th grade math classes?”
She is continuing the journey to learn best educational practices in order to reach her goal of engendering growth mindset in her students and continuing to create a classroom culture where students feel valued, supported, and encouraged.
